About
Desiree Perez
Early Life and Career
A lifelong New Yorker, Desiree Perez was born and raised in the Bronx. The daughter of Cuban immigrant parents, Desiree’s drive and unrelenting work ethic were ingrained at a young age; throughout her youth, she observed her father’s resiliency as a Spanish-speaking owner of a moving company with an English-speaking client base. Empowered by his tenacity, Desiree would often assist her father on the job, picking up new skillsets and acquiring an understanding of the requirements to run a business. Her ability to listen, learn, and adapt, combined with an innate willingness to gain hands-on experience, is woven into the blueprint of her successful career trajectory.
Long before the formation of Roc Nation and the executive leadership roles she gained industry-wide recognition for, Desiree spent 15 years working in nightlife management. She began honing her knowledge of business operations by managing clubs across New York City, a position that entailed balancing all financial transactions and scheduling live entertainment performances. In 1996, while coordinating the music acts for one of the nightclubs in her purview, Desiree booked the then-rising rapper who would ultimately become her longstanding business partner, trusted colleague, and friend, JAY-Z.
Throughout the course of their professional affiliation, which now spans nearly three decades, Desiree and JAY-Z have worked in tandem to build a global business empire. Their groundbreaking entrepreneurial pursuits and historic accomplishments have set new industry standards and created unprecedented opportunities within music and entertainment, film and television, and professional sports. Following their first interaction, JAY-Z went on to establish Baseline Studios in 2000, where Desiree utilized her nightclub management experience to oversee the studio’s accounting and day-to-day activities. Three years later, JAY-Z, Desiree, and Juan Perez jointly opened a high-end sports bar and lounge in Manhattan, The 40/40 Club, at which Desiree serves as Director of Operations. Recognizing the value of their collective expertise and shared vision, evidenced by the existing lucrative ventures they had collaborated on, the decision to create Roc Nation in 2008 was a natural next step in Desiree and JAY-Z’s careers.
Co-founded by Desiree, JAY-Z, Juan Perez, Jay Brown, and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith, Roc Nation has grown into the foremost entertainment organization worldwide. Reputable for cultivating and amplifying the careers of internationally acclaimed musicians, producers, performers, and athletes, Roc Nation’s vast range of cross-industry services has pioneered a new era in the entertainment business. Desiree spent the first decade of her career at Roc Nation as Chief Operating Officer, steering the company into positive revenue by conceptualizing and continuously refining its capabilities, in addition to determining strategies to expand into untapped sectors and introduce different verticals.
In 2019, JAY-Z appointed Desiree as Roc Nation’s Chief Executive Officer. Across her tenure, Desiree has used her executive positions to ensure Roc Nation’s ongoing success while embodying its core values at every step of the way. Credited as the architect behind many of the company’s revolutionary partnerships and brand endorsement deals, Desiree’s innovation, forward-thinking, and profound loyalty to its client base have directly influenced Roc Nation’s legacy and position at the apex of the industry.
